First National Sanitation Day tomorrow

A few weeks ago, the Vice President, Kwesi Amissah Arthur, together with two eminent chiefs, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, the Okyehene, launched the National Sanitation Day.

Initiated by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the first Saturday of every new month would be used to organise a nationwide clean-up exercise to help address the country’s sanitation challenges.

The exercise also seeks to encourage the public to take greater responsibility for improving their environment and ensure that laws promoting good sanitation are respected.

At the launch, Vice-President Amissah-Arthur expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of many Ghanaians towards sanitation, noting, for instance, that many people indiscriminately disposed of refuse, while others defecated at the beaches and other open places.

Last Tuesday, a delegation from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development led by the sector minister, Julius Debrah, called on the management of the Graphic Communication Group Limited (GCGL) to  elicit the support and commitment of the GCGL towards the implementation of the National Sanitation Day which starts tomorrow November 1.

Mr Debrah also appealed to the management to use its various platforms to educate the public on the need to keep their surroundings clean.

Managing Director for the GCGL, Mr Ken Ashigbey, assured the team of his outfit’s commitment to use its various media platforms to promote sanitation saying that sanitation was a shared responsibility.

“Ensuring good sanitation is not the sole responsibility of politicians and the judiciary but that of every leader, including traditional and religious leaders.” He said.
