Organised with the support of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), the forum was attended by representatives from the Judicial Services, Police, Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Social Welfare, Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and other human rights organisations in the Greater Accra Region.

The participants engaged in group discussions and presentations to discuss common domestic violence cases received at their various centres and evaluated the appropriate procedures for redress.

Addressing the forum, the Resource Mobilisation Manager of FIDA - Ghana, Mrs Susan Aryeetey, urged the media to support sustainable education on human rights to help deal with human rights violations and abuse.

Elaborating on the issue in an interview, she said, most women suffered human right violations because they were unaware of their rights and the processes for redress and pointed out that the media, especially radio that had a larger audience, had critical roles to play.

Legal Aid Officer at FIDA, Mrs Irene Abrochie-Nyahe, who educated participants on the Domestic Violence Act, said the law was enacted to protect Ghanaians against any forms of abuse and called on all to enlighten themselves on provisions of such laws.

Touching on the Interstate Succession Law, Mrs Eleanor Barns Botchway, also a Legal Aid Officer at FIDA, encouraged women to familiarise themselves with the law to derive maximum benefit from the provisions.

Mrs Botchway said financial difficulties and other constraints, tend to hamper the fight against domestic violence and encouraged the stakeholders to cooperate with each other to address some of these issues and the cumbersome processes associated with their service delivery.
