Fair Wages Commission issues GES teachers ultimatum

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to all teachers and staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) whose validation forms were queried to get them in order.

A full-page advertiser’s announcement in the Daily Graphic of Tuesday, March 1, warned that affected teachers and staff who fail to complete the process would forfeit their salary arears, or have their names either blocked or deleted from the payroll.

The announcement follows recent agitations at the teachers’ front over claims of unpaid salaries that culminated in strikes across the country.

The FWSC is asking the defaulting teachers and staff to resubmit their validation forms together with all requested information, which should reach the GES headquarters within the stipulated 14 days, to enable the Audit Service to validate the forms and to facilitate the payment of the salary areas.

But in a related development, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) is also asking the GES to delete 610 names on its staff list from government payrolls.

The BNI believes the staff, mostly teachers who continue to receive salaries, have either vacated post or resigned from same, may not exist at all or been deceased or dismissed, or cannot be traced or located whatsoever.

Security sources told Daily Graphic’s Albert Salia that the anomalies came to light when the Controller and Accountant General initiated steps not to pay any government employee without a bank account.
