Dormaahene to speak at GJA Awards

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Roland Affail Monney, has urged media practitioners in the country to highlight issues that will help the electorate to vote on merit during the November 7 polls.

He asked journalists, especially those working in the electronic media, to endeavour to blacklist politicians whose conduct could inflame passions.

“Let us try as much as possible to help maintain our forward momentum as far as our democracy is concerned by ensuring that issues dominate our media platforms in the electioneering,” he said.

Invitation

Mr Monney gave the advice when he led a delegation to officially invite the Omanhene of the Dormaa Traditional Area, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, as the special guest of honour for the 21st edition of the GJA Awards slated for Accra on August 27, 2016.

The event will be held on the theme: “The role of the media in peaceful and undisputed elections”.

Mr Monney was accompanied by Ms Mary Mensah, the Public Affairs Officer of the GJA; Mr Larry Paa Kwesi Moses, the Brong Ahafo Regional Secretary of the association, and other members of the association.

Traditional leaders

Mr Monney indicated that although the media were a major key stakeholder in the conduct of a credible general election, traditional rulers had to play an essential role to enable the country to sail through peaceful and successful polls.

While advising journalists to discharge their duties with integrity, he pleaded with traditional authorities to ensure that their subjects did not lead the media into unnecessary temptations that could interfere with journalistic standards.

Generosity

Mr Monney commended Osagyefo Agyeman Badu for his “incredible generosity” which had earned him an “enviable tag” among chiefs in the country and entreated other traditional rulers to support the work of the media.

The Krontihene of the Dormaa Traditional Area and Chief of Wamfie, Barimah Ansu Agyei, expressed the appreciation of the council for the honour the GJA had bestowed on the Dormaahene, in particular, and the traditional area in general.

He called on the media to be circumspect in their reportage by guarding against tendencies that could affect the smooth conduct of the general election.
