An update by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) indicates that as of Thursday, August 12, 2021, the country had recorded 522 new cases, while the cumulative number of active cases was 6,004.

Also, out of 1,528,732 tests conducted in the country since March 2020, a total of 111,232 persons tested positive for the disease representing 7.3 per cent of the test positivity rate.

Of the figure, 2,509  international travelers who arrived in the country through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have tested positive for the illness.

The number of persons who have recovered/discharged is 104,298 with 114 persons in severe condition and 80 others in critical condition.

Johnson and Johnson vaccine

The government took delivery of 177,600 doses of the single-shot Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

This brings to 1,515,450 the total number of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine the country has received.

Procurement of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine was done under the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT), a purchasing facility instituted by the African Union (AU) to boost the continent’s access to COVID-19 vaccines on the global market.

Under AVAT, AU member countries, including Ghana, have pooled financial resources to collectively purchase vaccines.

Vaccination

A large number of people thronged various vaccination centres in Accra, Tema and Kumasi to be vaccinated against the coronavirus with the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine on Monday, August 16, 2021.

There were long queues at many of the 123 vaccination centres in the two hotspot regions, as members of the public, both young and old, waited for their turn.

The process was, however, slow in some areas due to network fluctuations for the data input on smart devices and tablets.

The sheer large numbers gave an indication that public confidence in the vaccine has increased.
