The water supply project is a breakthrough for the people as it will help end the persistent water problem facing the people ever since they settled in the community several decades ago.

The project, initiated by the community, demonstrates the citizens’ determination to take their destiny in their own hands and not to wait until the central government comes to their aid.

Mobilisation of resources

The people, therefore, mobilised resources from citizens to extend the water system from the Adidome headwork in the Central Tongu District where the government had invested 18 million euros as a concessional grant from Austria aimed at supplying potable water with intake from the Volta Lake to the Central Tongu, Agotime Ziope and Adaklu districts.

In an inaugural address, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Maxwell Blagogee, commended the people for their proactive stance and disclosed that tenders had been opened at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) for the award of contracts to extend water to eight communities in the Adaklu traditional area under the Austrian-Ghana Adidome Water Project.

He said the government was committed to implementating policies aimed at bridging the gap between the rich and poor and that the free education policy was one of such programmes. He also gave an assurance that the government was determined to fulfil all promises made to the people.

water and sanitation

The Adaklu District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Phanuel Donkor Kadey, said the inauguration of the water system was a significant turning point for the people and others to chart a path to improve water and sanitation issues.

He urged them to support the government, saying the $1 million per constituency fund was an unprecedented initiative to accelerate the decentralisation process and rural development in the country.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adaklu, Mr Kwami Agbodza, commended teachers in the district for their contribution to the excellent results at the latest Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), He disclosed that any candidate with a single digit aggregate would be sponsored for further studies.

He called on all citizens to unite and fight for development as a common goal.

Water project as a cushion

The Dufia of Adaklu Ahunda-Boso, Togbe Asamoah IV, said the water project would cushion the people against the hardship from water shortage during the dry season when all water sources were dried up.

He declared that water from the Volta Lake was the only way for survival in the communities because past experiences from interventions on boreholes and hand-dug wells had failed the people.

The Paramount Chief of Adaklu, who chaired the function, Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V, said the collective responsibility of a people must be expressed in material form to advance the development of communities.
