Beatrice Laryea, others honoured at Ghana Sports Excellence Awards

Ghanaian Journalist Beatrice Laryea was one of 11 sports personalities honoured at the 2023 edition of the Annual Ghana Sports Excellence Awards at the British Council in Accra.

Beatrice, a Journalist with the Graphic Communications Group Ltd was decorated with the Exceptional Sports Journo Award at the event held on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

Beatrice is a versatile and experienced Journalist with a demonstrated history of working in the journalism field for years and skilled in writing sports as well as general news stories meant to bring positive change to some societal issues.

Beatrice has traveled across Ghana and other African countries to cover sporting tournaments for news stories in the Graphic Sports, Daily Graphic and Graphic Online.

The Ghana Sports Excellence Awards was instituted in 2014 by Hallmark Plus to recognise and celebrate various sports personalities who excelled in their respective sporting careers in the country.

Other winners

Media General's Afeafa Nfojoh and Bill Eshun were recognised as Exceptional Media Productions Genius and Exceptional Emerging Sports Journo respectively.

Also honoured on the night were Great Britain's sprinters Annie Tagoe (Exceptional Diaspora Break-Out Star) and Ragin Cajuns' Brock Appiah (Exceptional Diaspora Youth Athlete).

Footballer Charles Jesaja Herrmann who plies his trade with Liga club Waldhof Mannheim and who is the son of former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwabena Akonnor was adjudged the Exceptional Diaspora Male Athlete while Atlanta Dream's Leticia Amihere won the Exceptional Diaspora Female Athlete.

Black Stars and West Ham United attacking midfielder, Mohammed Kudus won the Exceptional Break-Out Star award.

There were also special recognition awards for the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Mustapha Ussif (Exceptional Sports Administrator), Ghana Football Association President, Kurt E S Okraku (Rising to the Challenge) and Black Queens' head coach, Nora Hauptle (Exceptional Expat Coach).

Sports personalities recognized at previous years at the Ghana Sports Excellence Awards include former Graphic Sports Editor, Mr Felix Abayateye in 2019 and ace women's football enthusiast and a news desk editor at the Daily Graphic, Rosalind K. Amoh in 2020. A Ghanaian-British journalist with the BBC, Jeanette Kwakye was also recognised in 2020. 

Selection process

According to the leadership of Hallmark Plus, the awardees were selected through an independent judging process under the direction of a chief reviewer.

“It is an important element of the event to unveil individuals and organisations that have historically been reluctant to showcase their achievements,” said Franklin Boateng, CEO of Hallmark Plus.

 The 2023 edition of the Ghana Sports Excellence Awards was sponsored by Ethiopian Airlines, Socca Box, Mulik, Parmalat, Nacional Cookie and Ocean Spray.
