AUCC President committed to students’ success

The induction of Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), as the first female Vice Chancellor in the country, served as a positive step for the induction of yet another female Vice Chancellor, Professor Mrs Esi Awuah, as the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) at Fiapre in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Another university that has followed the path of giving high positions to women in tertiary institutions is the African University College of Communications (AUCC) which recently inducted the President, Dr Koryoe Anim-Wright, as the substantive holder of the position.Competent, elegant woman The competent, elegant and fluent woman was appointed as the acting President in June 2015 and she acted in that position till August 2015, when she was confirmed in September 1, 2015, and inducted into office in October 21, this year. She is the first ever female President of the institution, since its inception, and her investiture recently was performed by  the Chairman of the University Council, Mr Kwasi Osei who also administered the Oath of Office. Dr Anim-Wright joined the AUCC family as Dean of the Business School in 2013, and was the immediate past Vice President (VP) for Academic Affairs, who was also holding the position of the Dean of the school which was renamed the Sam E. Jonah School of Business. As VP for Academic Affairs, she served as the university’s chief academic officer, with the responsibility of managing the school’s academic units and the policies and practices that affect the academic life of the university college.Achievements During her tenure of office, and prior to her appointment at AUCC, she worked at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) where she served as Director of the Centre for Management Development before her appointment as Director of Corporate Affairs and Institutional Advancement.In previous years, Dr Anim-Wright served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Western Connecticut State University (WestConn), Danbury, CT (USA). As Vice President at the AUCC, Dr Anim-Wright had the overall responsibility for the stewardship of WestConn’s advancement programme, including oversight of the coordination, planning and management of the university's fundraising/development, alumni, media, public relations, events and publications and design functions. She also managed the Western Connecticut State University Foundation, Inc., where she was instrumental in helping the foundation increase its assets from $8 million to $16 million.  Consultancy roles She was a consultant for Consortium for International Activities, where she served on a 10-member team of American University researchers selected by the Midwestern Universities Consortium for International Activities to conduct a feasibility study to establish a national university in Mali, West Africa.In 1996, she led an educational investment mission to Ghana with the participation of five universities, including Meharry Medical College, Miami University and Chicago State University (1996).She has served on many boards in Danbury, CT (USA), including the Advisory Board of the Women’s Centre of Greater Danbury; a Commissioner on the Board of City Centre Danbury; Vice Chair of the Charles Ives Authority Board for the Performing Arts in Danbury; a member of the American Red Cross Board, Danbury Chapter; and a member of the Hord Foundation Board.She currently serves on the Board of Directors of MG Radio Limited, as well as a member of the Ghana Institute of Languages Board. In 2015, she served as a member of the National Planning Committee responsible for the planning of the Africa Union Public Sector Day.She earned a Ph.D. in Communication and Development from Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, OH (USA). She also has a BA in Communications: Radio/TV Production from Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio (USA).CeremonyA colourful ceremony was organised on the school’s premises to usher her into office formally as the President.Mr Kwasi Osei, who swore her into office, said “change is the only constant thing in life, so as the Founder and Former President, Mr Kojo Yankah, is handing over the presidency of AUCC to you, you should continue the legacy set by Mr Yankah to keep the boundless vision of the institution”.AcceptanceIn her acceptance remarks, Dr Anim-Wright expressed her appreciation to Mr Yankah for entrusting her with the leadership position of the university.She indicated that students’ success meant much more than academic success; therefore, she would ensure that students were provided with opportunities to build their self-knowledge, self-confidence, as well as a selfless ethical compass that would allow them to lead good lives in order to make meaningful contributions to society.Academic ExcellenceDr Anim-Wright stated that academic excellence was the cornerstone of the mission of the institution, so for students to be successful, faculty members must be committed to academic excellence through teaching, learning, research as well as service.She said academic excellence was her hallmark and she would strengthen the academic programmes with strategic ways by developing and growing programmes which would meet the needs of the students and the larger community.
