The organisation presented the items to both Muslim and non-Muslim inmates of the prison to project the virtues of sharing and fellow feeling encouraged during the period of the fast.

The food items included 14 bags of rice, 10 bags of sugar, 30 boxes of Indomie noodles, 400 bags of sachet water, 1500 balls of Fante kenkey, two boxes of dates, 200 loaves of bread, 10 cartons of beverage and five boxes of banana.

The organisation also presented a box of the Holy Quran to the inmates.

Speaking with the inmates, a lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Alhaji Suleiman Mumuni, said Ramadan gave Muslims an opportunity to confess their misdeeds and also renew their relationship with Allah.

He said acts such as charity, additional prayers and recitation of the Quran enhanced the spiritual growth of Muslims.

Alhaji Suleiman asked the inmates who were jailed for bad deeds to use the opportunity to seek forgiveness and pray for Allah to help them overcome their challenges.

He said those who were in prison because of  false allegations should know that it was a test from Allah, as stated in Quran 2:115 that, "He will test you with something of fear, hunger, loss in goods, lives and the fruits of your toil but will give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere."

Reflection

A lecturer at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Ghana, Dr Taibach Afaa, asked the inmates to use the month of Ramadan to reflect and seek forgiveness from Allah.

She asked the prisoners to take advantage of the opportunities available in the prison to learn a trade or enhance an already known skill "such that once you leave the prison, you'll not become a liability to society as you would not go back to your old ways."

The President of Annisaa Foundation, Hajia Rukayatu Iddriss, said the fact that they were in prison did not mean that others were better than them.

"Only Allah knows the best of human beings as He loves those who are pious. It is a test from Allah and if you bear it patiently, your rewards shall be great," she said.
