Amidu’s submissions on Anas lack wisdom – Professor

A legal scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has condemned former Attorney-General, Mr Martin Amidu, after the latter questioned the integrity of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

In a series of articles last week, Mr Amidu alleged that it was the government which commissioned Anas to undertake the judiciary corruption investigation, which uncovered corruption involving 180 workers in the judiciary.

He also alleged that Anas had colluded with President John Mahama to suppress the results of a similar investigation into corruption in the legislature.

Mr Amidu further alleged that Anas’ Tiger EYE PI firm was not legally registered and so should not have been engaged in any undercover investigations.

Commenting on the development on Facebook, Prof. Kwaku Asare said, “There is no iota of wisdom or sound legal reasoning in Amidu's assertions.”

According to him, one does not need to register a company, get a government license or even be a journalist to employ any reasonable method to detect and report corruption.

“A citizen will be perfectly within her rights to secretly record any judge or public official taking bribes. We need more, not less, people to be involved in the war against public corruption,” he said.

Prof. Asare also condemned Mr Amidu’s assertion that no northerner would be elected President of Ghana in the next three decades because President Mahama, a northerner, was presiding over corruption.

He said Mr Amidu was allowing his quarrels with President Mahama to cloud his judgement.

Prof. Asare said: “If Amidu's hooey that the President's conduct will preclude a northerner from being elected as President in the next three decades is reasonable, then equally the Vice-President's conduct should preclude a southerner from being elected as Vice-President during the same time period.

He said the former A-G Amidu seemed to be distracting the media from focusing on issues that matter.

“The media should stop glorifying Amidu's palpable self-aggrandizement and focus on the delay in the prosecution of the corrupt judges,” he added.
