He said in this era when many of those involved in serious accidents lost their valuables to people who rushed to the scene to assist in rescue operations, the action of the police was commendable.

The victim, Dzifa Tanduy, a Togolese Chef, who had been living and working in Ghana for the past seven years, also commended doctors and nurses at the Emergency and Accident Ward of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for their hard work and dedication which gave him hope that there were still some good in people.

Narrating the incident in an interview with the Daily Graphic at its offices in Accra, Mr Tanduy said at about 4 a.m., on Monday June 5, 2017 he left home for the Tudu-Aflao Station en route to Lome,Togo.

He said he boarded a Toyota Haice bus, with about 15 other passengers, including the driver at the Tudu-Aflao Station. They set off for Aflao at exactly 5 a.m. but on reaching the traffic intercession at the Flag Staff House he started sleeping.

Accident

He said he woke up at the accident centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in pains, with cuts on his head and arms.

A policeman by his bed told him that he had been involved in a terrible accident at the 37 Military Hospital Roundabout, and that he and the driver were rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, because their condition was critical.

At the time of the accident, Mr Tanduy said, he had GH¢6,000, mobile phones and other valuables on him.

He said he became very worried because the money was a loan. Moreover, he had heard of cases where belongings of accident victims were often stolen.

Dedicated officers

Mr Tanduy said after his discharge from the hospital, he met the investigator in charge of the case who took him to one of the offices where the police had packed the belongings of accident victims, and luckily he identified his bag and picked it up.

Mr Tanduy said when he opened the bag, he was surprised that everything was intact, his GH¢6,000, the mobile phones and other valuables.

For me, therefore, the Ghana Police Service was the best on the continent, although there might be a few bad ones among the personnel, he said.

For his part, General Corporal Patrick Kofi Bansah of the Nima MTTD, confirmed the accident and said on reaching the scene, the police realised that the passengers were trapped in the vehicle and, therefore, called on personnel of the Ghana Fire Service and the military, who assisted the police to evacuate the accident victims to the 37 Military Hospital.

He said their scattered belongings were sent to the Nima Police Station for safe-keeping, where the accident vehicle was also towed to.
