They were procured by the government from China.

A 105mm  Howitzer is a close support, field artillery weapon that is mobile, light towed and has the capability to fire extended range ammunition up to 18 kilometres.

The weapons would reinforce the artillery with more fire support for their activities to defend the country against any insurgency.

The Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Major General Richard Opoku-Adusei, inaugurated the weapons yesterday at a ceremony in Ho.

Transition

The 66th Artillery Regiment was established  from the Medium Mortar Regiment which was formed in 1966. It was later transformed into an artillery regiment on June 3, 2002.

The regiment is 50 years old this year and will mark the celebration on the theme, “Celebrating 50 years of professionalism and dedicated service to the Ghana Armed Forces and Motherland.”

Excellence

Major General Opoku-Adusei said the regiment was noted for excellence at ECOMOG missions and during state and international functions.

He congratulated the regiment on its 50th anniversary and said they should strive to maintain the high standard of professionalism and dedication.

Major General Opoku-Adusei performed the first symbolic firing of the weapons and was followed by the Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Selorm Amengor, and the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs Fafa Adinyira.
