They are Metropolitan Pensions Trust, Kludjeson International, IPMC and SEDCO Publications.

Apart from presenting books valued at GH¢2,500, SEDCO Publications also presented a cheque for GH¢12,500.

While the Metropolitan Pensions Trust, Ghana, donated 20 gas cookers and pledged an amount of GH¢10,000, Kludjeson International donated 10 K-pads and 10 computers, while IPMC also presented 15 Dell laptops.

The GH¢10,000 pledged by Metropolitan Pensions Trust will be used to refurbish the school library of the Best Teacher.

The companies made the presentation at a short ceremony in Accra last Friday.

A Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, who received the items, commended institutions which had partnered the ministry over the years to successfully organise the awards, for their effort.

‘Indeed, awards to national best teachers have improved over the years and this has come about as a result of the enormous support from dear sponsors like you’, he said.

Ghana joins the rest of the world on October 5 annually to celebrate Teachers’ Day – a day set aside by the United Nations to honour teachers. In Ghana, the day is celebrated by rewarding teachers who make vital contribution to education and development.

Prizes

This year’s National Best Teacher would receive GH¢65,000, to put up his/her own house, a laptop and a set of computers for his/her school.

The first runner-up will be given a saloon car, a laptop and a set of computers for his or her school, while the second runner-up will also receive a saloon car, a laptop and a set of computers for his/her school.

The Deputy Minister said because all teachers could not be rewarded, there was the need for a fair and objective selection process to be instituted.

Mr Kyeremeh, who also chairs the National Planning Committee of the Best Teacher Award Scheme, thanked the donors for their gesture and asked for their continuous support.

Present at the ceremony were the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, and the Deputy Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Stephen Adu.
