2 churches clash, leaving 5 injured

A clash between members of two rival churches at Juansa in the Asante Akim Central District in the Ashanti Region last Friday left five people injured, four vehicles dented and a house set ablaze.

But for the quick intervention of the police, the situation could have been worse.

The violent act occured after members of one of the factions allegedly laid ambush and attacked the others with stones and other missiles.

The two churches, Saviour Church of Ghana (SCRAG) and The Saviour Church of Ghana (TSCG), were once a single church under the name Saviour Church of Ghana, with headquarters at Osiem in the Eastern Region, until the demise of the General Overseer, Opanin Isaac Asirifi Dadeako, a couple of years ago.

A litigation over the property of the church led to some of the members breaking away to form TSCG.

Since then, the two churches have been at loggerheads.

The Agogo clash took place at a crusade organised by the SCG at Agogo last Friday.

The Konongo Police Divisional Commander, Chief Supt Alex Amenyo, who briefed the Daily Graphic on the incident yesterday, said members of the TSCG wanted to prevent the others from holding the crusade.

He said as the SCG members started gathering for the ceremony, stones started flying all over.

Five members of SCG were hit and were sent to hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Due to the disturbances, the crusade was cancelled on the orders of the police in order to prevent further clashes.

Chief Supt Amenyo stated that the police were yet to make any arrests. He also indicated that every effort would be made to trace the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, police investigations are underway to get to the bottom of the matter.
