There are reports a certain university named Cape Coast University (CCU) has been banned in Nigeria, confusing the said CCU with the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

This is following a news report in Nigeria that talked about an investigative journalism work that exposed a couple of fake or unaccredited universities said to be operating in Togo and Benin and had been offering unaccredited degrees to Nigerians.

The said news report listed a number of the said universities said to be located in Togo and Benin and even mentioned another one said to be operating from Ho in the Volta Region.

Nigeria has since suspended the accreditation of degrees from Benin and Togo.

It is following this that the University of Cape Coast, in a press release issued on January 4, 2024, is reacting to a Ghanaweb report claiming that the UCC had been prohibited from operating in Nigeria.

The UCC described the Ghanaweb report as "false" and clarified that it has no official presence in Nigeria, neither through its campus nor through any franchised institution.

Furthermore, UCC emphasised that all international students, including Nigerians, who wish to study at the university must apply directly through its official channels.

The press release highlights that Ghanaweb's publication appears to have erroneously confused UCC with a different institution, "Cape Coast University" (CCU), further adding to the confusion.

In an attempt to quell concerns and protect its reputation, the UCC reiterated its position as a highly respected academic institution with global recognition. The university pointed to its ranking as the top university in Ghana and West Africa, and seventh in Africa, according to the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

To ensure authenticity, the university encouraged individuals and institutions to always verify the legality of any certificate purportedly issued by the university.

In conclusion, the release categorically denied any involvement in Nigeria and strongly condemned the publication of misleading information. The university also urged the public to rely on official sources and exercise caution when encountering online reports.
