The campaign, which aims at promoting domestic tourism among students and the youth in Ghana, would enlighten young people about tourist sites, as well as the importance of tourism to the country.

At a sensitisation programme organised for the Ann’s Preparatory school in Accra last Friday, Ms Asare said the role of the youth in promoting tourism was essential to enhance the sector.

According to her, tourism was crucial to the economic growth of the country since it generated revenue, however due to challenges of low patronage, the industry was not active.

The 2011 Miss Tourism encouraged the students to see tourism as an adventure which could also serve as leisure.

“The youth have vital roles to play in making Ghana the number one preferred tourist destination to other countries by becoming ambassadors, ” she said.

With their active participation, Ms Asare said the youth could help rekindle the tourism industry for Ghanaians to appreciate, protect and preserve it for future generation.

The challenges

Ms Asare indicated that the tourism industry in the country was faced with many challenges, especially accessibility and sanitation.

Through the campaign, she expressed the hope that the industry would attract the attention needed from private sector and the government to enhance tourism in the country.

She debunked the notion that tourism was meant for the rich, saying “tourism is for everybody”.

The project

The project is expected to be extended to schools throughout the country.

The second phase of the project would be a tour where intelligent, smart, humble respectful, courageous and eloquent students would be selected from different schools in the country to participate in Miss Tourism tour.

The students would be trained in tourism-related issues to serve as tourism ambassadors for their various schools.

They would also be given the opportunity to educate other students in the country using the media.
