Students advised to have self-discovery attitude

A former Justice of the Supreme Court, Professor V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe, has encouraged students to have a self-discovery attitude and learn from observations.

Speaking at the launch of the 85th Anniversary of his alma mater, Accra Academy, Justice Crabbe said education should aim at implanting honesty, integrity and impartiality in the individual.

In front of an audience of hundreds of yellow-blue-dressed students, Mr Crabbe, who completed the school in 1943, restated rules on efficient learning in order to acquire wisdom.

“Have a specific purpose for your study, get the essentials as you go along, supplement the new ideas with your own thoughts, apply the best edge and experience, criticise as you go along and put the knowledge you acquire to use for your country,” he advised the students.

In addition, he said the epitome of education was to draw out the best qualities of the individual for the benefits of the family, clan, community and nation.

Over the years, thousands of Ghanaians have completed the school, with a number of them advancing academically to become professors, chief executive officers of companies and most of them occupying key positions in the legislature, corporate institutions and other influential positions.

Justice Crabbe said he was happy to have been a student of Accra Academy and had learned the value of ‘Esse Quam Videri,’ the academy’s Latin motto that means “to be rather than to seem to be.”

 Resilience

In his address, the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Edward Doe Adjaho, who completed in 1977, said: “Accra Academy has given us so much, moulded us and given us resilience to stand tall when we face challenges and difficulties.”

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Nii Abbey-Ashong, advised students and staff to constantly remind themselves of the philosophical underpinnings of the school, and work hard to advance the school’s vision and mission statement.

The anniversary is being marked with various events during the next 12 months, including a church service at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral this Saturday at 9 a.m., an essay competition in November and a Speech and Prize-Giving day in March next year.

Dr Kofi George Konuah, Mr Samuel Neils Awuletey, Mr Gottfried Narku Alema and Mr James Akwei Halm-Addo founded Accra Academy on July 20, 1931.
