National Children’s Trust supports students

The National Partnership for Children’s Trust (NPCT), a child-focused non-governmental organisation, has granted 115 scholarships worth GH¢170,000 to students in educational institutions across the country.

The scholarship is to assist bright students who have difficulty in continuing with their education due to their inability to meet their financial obligations.

The Republic Bank and Ecobank have been core partners to the Trust over the past 18 years.

Scholarship

At a ceremony to present the awards in Accra on October 24, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NPTC, Mr Roland Akosah, said the annual scholarship award was to cover the 2019/2020 academic year.

He said they would also donate books and other educational materials to students across the country.

He was quick to add that students under the free senior high school programme would still benefit from the fund to enable them to purchase some items needed for school.

He thanked organisations and entrepreneurs, who had been supporting the Trust namely US Africa Children’s Fellowship, a New York-based charity; African Regent Hotel and Belshaw Limited.

Mr Akosah encouraged other individuals and institutions to assist in advancing the welfare of children in the country.

He charged the beneficiaries to study hard to become responsible citizens in the future.

Expansion

However, he said, the organisation had plans to expand the range and scope of the programme by introducing a mentor-protégé programme, career guidance counselling and career planning programmes and community services where students would participate in community activities during vacations, such as serving as a library aid, or a nurse’s aide at a local clinic.

Support

The Managing Director of the Republic Bank, Mr Farid Antar, in his remarks said their partnership was part of the financial institution’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and quest to support the development of children.

He said the bank had so far invested more than GH¢2 million over the past four years in CSR engagements.

“We have always been there for this Trust and we will continue to be there for as long as we can,” he said and presented a cheque to the Trust.

Also at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Relish Health Food, Mr Lawrence Addo, who was recognised as the single largest individual donor to the

scheme, encouraged the students to study hard to become better persons in the future.

“Children are the bed rock of our society and I think its my calling to donate to support such a cause,” he said.
He donated an amount of GH¢100,000 expressing the hope to donate more next year.

Mr Addo has so far contributed over GH¢500,000 in the past nine years to support the Trust.

Beneficiaries

Past beneficiaries, Yussif Issaka, who recently completed medical school and Clement Bofo-Oppong, a graduate of the University of Ghana, both expressed their profound gratitude to the Trust and encouraged the students to stay focused, set realistic goals and work hard at them.
