Nana Oye commends Junior Graphic

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, has commended the Junior Graphic for providing a platform for children to play and learn through the annual fun fair and spelling competition.

“This is an important event because it provides a platform for children to play, laugh, learn and explore. It is for these reasons that I commend the Junior Graphic of the Graphic Communications Group Limited for this fun fair”, she stated.

According to her, it is a very applaudable initiative and she hopes other corporate organisations will follow the example of the Junior Graphic to put smiles on the faces of children, especially those from humble and vulnerable environments.

Nana Oye Lithur said this during the annual Junior Graphic fun fair and the final of the National Junior Graphic Spelling Competition as well as the 15th anniversary celebration of the paper at the Lizzy Sports Complex at East Legon, Accra.

The Editor of the Junior Graphic, Mrs Mavis Kitcher, noted that since the paper was mainly for children, it acknowledged the efforts of those who excelled in various fields and highlights their achievements to encourage and motivate others to learn from such examples.

For this reason, she said, the Junior Graphic has set up fan clubs in schools to encourage members to read the paper, learn how to summarise stories and write articles for publication.

“That is why throughout our 15 years, many pages of the Junior Graphic continue to be written by children. I implore every child in basic and senior high school to ensure that their works are published in the paper before they undertake tertiary education. By so doing, you would be writing your own history, as many years later, you can show your works to other young children to encourage them to cultivate the habit of reading,” she added.

Prof. Esi Sutherland Addy, a professor of Literature of the University of Ghana, Legon, said in order for children to appreciate life better, parents should endeavour to take them to other parts of the country for them to learn the way of life of other people.

For his part, the Manager of the McCarthy Hill branch of Ecobank, Mr Mark Adjei, said healthy competition among children was important for their upbringing, adding that “it was for that reason that the bank partnered the Junior Graphic to organise the spelling competition”.

The event was sponsored by Ecobank Ghana Limited, MoneyGram, the Ghana Book Trust, Voltic Mineral Water, Magic Malt, the Ghana Book Publishers Association, Peak Milk and Papaye.
