Mfantsiman Girls calls for retooling of ICT, science labs

THE Headmistress of Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School, Phyllis Arthur-Simpson, has appealed for help to retool the school’s information communication technology (ICT) and science laboratories to enhance academic excellence.

According to her, the school had excelled in a number of areas that required the use of computers. However, she expressed concern about the computer laboratory, saying, “Our computer laboratory is a sorry sight; we do not have a single desktop computer for students to use”.

She further said the school only had a few laptops that were provided by some philanthropists, but those were inadequate, considering the number of students in the school”.
Mrs Arthur-Simpson made the call at the 63rd anniversary Speech and Prize giving Day of the school.

This year’s event, supported by the 1998-year group of Mfantsiman Old Girls Association (MOGA 98), was on the theme “Re-positioning Mfantsiman Girls for academic excellence: The role of stakeholders”.

State-of-the-art laboratory

Mrs Arthur-Simpson further noted that the school’s science laboratory also required some upgrading and appealed for the construction of a state-of-the-art laboratory for the school.

She also appealed for the provision of classroom furniture to augment the existing ones being used by the students, as well as support towards fencing the school to protect the students and prevent further encroachment of the school’s land.

The school field, she also said, was in a very deplorable state and said even though the sports team had been performing creditably, they would do better with improved facilities.

She also called for work to be expedited on a government-initiated dormitory block which had stalled.

She commended past students of the school for supporting the school in diverse ways.

High performing school

A Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, in an address, observed that Mfantsiman Girls had worked over the years to position itself as one of the high performing schools in the country, raising some of the greatest women.

He urged products of the school to work even more to redefine what the girl child stood so that they will not be boxed into the traditional stereotype and instead rise up, break the glass ceilings and defy the status quo.

The Deputy Minister further stated that the government, in promoting access to quality education, had removed systemic and economic barriers to ensure that people achieved their potentials in life.

He called on Ghanaians not to politicise the introduction of the Free SHS policy, saying, “Politics must be taken out of this”.

The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, in a speech read on her behalf, commended the school for its contribution towards national development.

She urged management of the school not to lower the standard of training for the girls, saying that, management of Mfantsiman Girls must make frantic efforts in guarding the image of the school.
