GSTS alumni raise funds to revamp technical department

The Greater Accra Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) alumni association has launched a campaign to raise funds to renovate the technical department of the school, in Takoradi, Western Region.

This follows the rapid deteriorating nature of the technical department of the GSTS, which is affecting academic work.

The department on which the school drew its relevance, according to the old students, was also currently inadequately resourced.

To reverse the trend, the association aims to raise an amount of $100,000 for the GSTS Alumni Association (GAA) Endowment Fund to finance the re-development of the technical department and various projects such as a solar power system.

To launch the campaign, a fund-raising dinner held in Accra attracted scores of former students of the schools who address themselves as GIANTS, representatives of corporate bodies and members of sister schools, particularly former students of Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School.

At the end of the event, which was held on the theme: “Quality secondary technical education, the key to Ghana’s development,” an amount of GH¢130,000 was raised.

The amount excluded pledges made during the programme.

Global policy

At the event, which was also used to swear in a new leadership of the association, the immediate past Accra chapter president of the GAA, Mr Daniel Kwadwo Teye, said the decision to revamp the technical department of the school was in line with the global policy of the GAA.

He said some investigations and consultations revealed that the department on which the school drew its relevance was inadequately resourced and was deteriorating at a fast rate.

In 2021, he said the school approached the GAA for support to prepare candidates for the West African Senior Secondary Examination (WASSCE) which prompted the group to take the step to revamp the technical department.

The chairperson of the GAA Board of Trustees and Endowment Fund, Dr Amos Ofori Quaah, urged alumni of GSTS to support the future and well-being of their alma mater.

"Let us always remember that most of us are what we are today because of the excellent tutelage we received from our school," he said.

He said supporting the school would ensure future generations received the rigorous training and upbringing the alumni received as young boys from various backgrounds.

"Through our support we can ensure that GSTS nurtures well-rounded young men to contribute to the development of Ghana," he said.
He underscored the need for individuals to always consider legacy giving.

Deepen efforts

In an inaugural speech, the new president of the Accra chapter of the GAA, Mr Ernest Kwame Tsatsu Tamakloe, gave an assurance that the new executive team would continue with the good work of the previous executives who had set best standards for supporting their alma mater.

He said the new executives believed that alumni activities should not usurp the responsibilities of the state, parents and school management, but rather support them in providing a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.

The headmaster of GSTS, Rev. Dr Kennedy Obeng, expressed gratitude to all sponsors, donors and members of the Accra chapter of the GAA for their support to rebuild the technical department and provide other facilities for the school.
