Ghana STEM Education Roundtable Dialogue held

The Ghana STEM Education Roundtable Dialogue has been held in Accra in furtherance of Ghana’s effort to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by the year 2030 through an economic transformation agenda.

STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics provides students with a well-rounded foundation of skills to help them develop the critical 21st-century skills they need to succeed in college, career and life.
Expanding access to high-quality STEM and Computer Science Education provides more pathways to Good Jobs.

The meeting which was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with DreamOval Foundation and Partners, MEST, Dext Technologies, Foundervine and Nesta Challenges was under the theme “Understanding Ghana’s STEM and Entrepreneurship Agenda and its impact on education in the 21st century”.

The aim of the STEM roundtable dialogue is to synchronise Government of Ghana’s agenda on STEM and seek additional support to help in the attainment of impacting the lives of 20,000 young people and 500 teachers across the country over a three-year period.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum who delivered a virtual speech, said in order for Ghana to compete globally, the country’s STEM strategy should be creating the STEM pathway and pipeline for students to succeed.

He said the government is building 20 STEM centres across the country and10 new schools are going to be operationalized as STEM Schools which will all apply the smart school concept as pertains in Singapore and other developed countries.

In his remarks, the vice president of DreamOval Foundation Mr. Francis Ahene Affoh reiterated that the programme is intended to impact the lives of young generations to make a difference in society, and in order for the programme to succeed, all the stakeholders should put their shoulders to the wheel to drive this new education agenda.

Madam Constance Agyeman, Director, International Development and a moderator at the STEM roundtable dialogue, recounted her experience with working with young people to address the industrial strategy issues in the United Kingdom.

The programme offered an opportunity to understand the Government of Ghana's plan for STEM education and how the private sector and other stakeholders can support the effort at driving the STEM agenda.

The DreamOval Foundation was set up in 2013 with the aim of using knowledge to create a better society in Ghana. “Our aim is to bridge the knowledge gap through the creation, sharing and utilization of knowledge with Education and Technology being our key focus areas.”
