17 Emerge champions in 10th UCMAS competition
Seventeen pupils emerged champions in the 10th National Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) competition held at Kasoa last Saturday.
There were 1,450 participating children from 70 basic schools and UCMAS centres across the country.

The champions were Ivana Elinam Apedo, Ivan Elolo Apedo and Kwadwo Boamah Antwi all of Crown Prince Academy; Richard Nii Adjei Laryea, Ishmael Hector Morton and Jayden Gommey from the Alpha Beta School; Shaurya Gurbani, Al-Rayan International School; Prince Adu- Adjei, Perpetual Help School; Calvert Atikes Koku Akafia, Labone Centre; Salma Mohammed Rushidi, Emerald Community School; Barbara Dzeidorm Tawiah, Saint Michael's School; Ann-Winfred Elikem Yawa Benson, Mt. Zion Methodist School.
The rest were Dennis Boakye Yiadom Kwesi Junior from Achimota UCMAS Centre; Nana Frempong Boakye, Hope of Glory Montessori; Xorseli Kwaku Agyei Amankwah, Grace Preparatory School; Huberta Awuraa Adwoa Adodea Hansen, Hill View Montessori and Stanley Elikem Ayerson Jnr. from Chrismira Montessori.
Apart from the champions, 313 others also received various awards for equally performing well in the competition.
Success
The UCMAS concept is a brain development programme for over 300 schools through 50 learning centres for children within the age bracket of five and 13 years across the country to unearth and develop their talents.
The theme for this year's challenge was: "An UCMAS child, a gift in today's competitive world."
At an awards event organised on Sunday, April 28, to award deserving participants of the competition at the Pentecost Convention Centre at the Kasoa Millennium City, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UCMAS Ghana, Mr Roger Ohemeng, rated the competition as one of the most successful competitions they had had over the years.
"The event overall has been very successful and impressive and it is one of the best we have ever organised in recent times looking at the fact that this is the first time we have organised an event where over a thousand children have come to sleep," he said.

Mr Ohemeng further called for a partnership between UCMAS Ghana and the Government of Ghana to enable them to extend their services to students and pupils in public schools.
"As it has been our call over the years, we are calling for the support of government.
"We are knocking on the doors of government and we are much hopeful that sooner than later, we may have a positive response from government so that we can extend our services to our brothers and sisters who are in the public schools," he said.
The Chairman of the Ghana Education Service Council, Mr Michael Nsowah, said the UCMAS development programmes, among other things, enhanced the concentration and mental calculation skills of pupils which made them excel in all subjects.
