Floods: GH¢300m to be released from contingency fund for relief support

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood relief and mitigation measures following Monday's rains that caused widespread flooding in Accra and other parts of southern Ghana.

The money, which is to be released by the Minister of Finance, will be used to provide relief for affected persons and finance measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding.

A statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday [June 30, 2026] said GH¢150 million has been earmarked for emergency relief for flood victims and affected communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will be spent on flood mitigation projects.

As part of the government's emergency response, President Mahama also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies in rescue and relief operations.

Assessment

Earlier on Monday June 29, 2026, President Mahama undertook an aerial inspection of flood-hit communities to assess the extent of the destruction caused by hours of unusually heavy rainfall.

The Presidency said the release of the funds and the deployment of security personnel formed part of measures being rolled out to protect lives and property and improve the country's response to recurring floods.
