Sylvester Nii Sabahn Quaye: Ghana football mourns dedicated administrator

Ghana football is in mourning following the passing of Sylvester Nii Sabahn Quaye, the veteran administrator whose name became synonymous with discipline, dedication, and decades of selfless service to the beautiful game.

Mr. Quaye passed away on Sunday, June 28, at the age of 77, after a period of illness.

His death was confirmed by the Quaye family in a statement issued on Monday, which revealed that although he had been showing signs of recovery, he was rushed to the hospital after complaining of minor pains and sadly passed away.

For those who followed Ghana football closely, Sabahn Quaye was more than an administrator—he was a pillar of the sport.

He served as Team Manager of Accra Hearts of Oak for several years, standing on the touchlines during some of the club's most glorious eras. His tactical understanding of the game, his ability to manage players, and his no-nonsense approach earned him respect across the football fraternity.

His expertise and experience did not go unnoticed. He was later appointed as Team Manager of the Black Stars, a role in which he served with distinction, helping to manage the senior national team during a period of transition and growth. Beyond Hearts and the national team, Quaye also held administrative positions at Legon Cities FC, further cementing his reputation as one of the most experienced football administrators of his generation.

In 2023, the Ghana Football Association, through its Foundation, visited Quaye at his residence in Accra and donated GH¢10,000 to support his medical treatment—a testament to the respect and admiration the football community held for him.

A book of condolence has been opened at both his residence and the family house for sympathisers who wish to pay their respects. The family has requested prayers and support during this difficult time and has asked the public and the media to respect their privacy.

Details of the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
