Early Childhood Development Centre for Bongnayili Basic School

Two child-centred non-governmental organisations have funded the construction of a-GH¢127,000 Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) attached to the Bongnayili Basic School in the Kumbungu District in the Northern Region.

The facility, which is furnished with teaching and learning materials, tables and chairs for the schoolchildren and teachers, and a playing ground, was constructed by the Baptist Child Development Programme (BCDP) with funding from the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC).

Prior to the construction of the new facility, the schoolchildren were using a deplorable structure that put their lives in danger, and the intervention by the two child-centred non-governmental organisations (CCFC and BCDP) is to provide a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning and to ensure an increase in school enrolment in the area.

Inauguration

At the inauguration ceremony at Bongnayili last Thursday, the Programme leader of BCDP, Rev. Thomas Sayibu Imoro, said the construction of the facility was as a result of an assessment made by the NGO last year which identified cracks in the old school block where the children sat for their lessons.

Rev. Imoro expressed the hope that the new facility would motivate parents to send their children to school and appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to post some female teachers to the school to help take care of the children, as all the teachers currently teaching at the school were males.

Rev. Imoro again appealed to the GES to facilitate the full use of the facility to improve the quality of learning in the school, adding that the BCDP, together with its funding agency, CCFC, would continue to monitor the changes in the school, in terms of improvement in the performance of the children which would encourage more investment to expand and maintain the facility.

Appeal

He, however, appealed to the school authorities and the entire community to take good care of the facility to improve education in the area.

An Assistant Director in charge of Supervision at the Kumbungu District Directorate of Education, Mr Napari Salifu, who represented the District Director of Education, gave an assurance that his outfit would commit to the maintenance of the school and commended the BCDP and its funding agency for the provision of the facility to improve teaching and learning, as well as increase school enrolment in the district.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kumbungu, Mr Abdul-Salam Hamza Fataw, in a speech read on his behalf by an Assistant Director of Administration at the assembly, Mr Charles Akurugu, also pledged the support of the assembly in the maintenance of the school block and other additional facilities to enhance teaching and learning in the school.

He called on the community to put the facility to good use and expressed his gratitude to the donors for the gesture.
