AUCC sets up Komla Dumor Centre

A Centre for Broadcast Journalism has been established in honour of the late  broadcaster, Komla Dumor by the African University College of Communication (AUCC) for his contribution towards raising the standard of broadcast journalism in Ghana and Africa

The Komla Dumor Centre for Broadcast Journalism would design special training programmes, workshops, public lectures, international conferences and publish papers and books on broadcasting.

The centre, which will be inaugurated on Saturday, October 3, 2015, will also run a post-graduate programme in broadcast journalism, while emphasising on television and radio, policy research and media, among others.

 

This was disclosed at the 14th matriculation ceremony of the university in Accra last Saturday.

The Centre

Addressing the over 400 matriculates, the President of the university, Dr Koryoe Anim-Wright, said the late journalist epitomised the core values on which the university was built,hence the decision to honour him.

She added that the centre was established as a journalism education project in memory of  the ace journalist.

She further stated that the centre would focus on the cultivation and growth of the next generation of leaders in the African media.

She gave the assurance that the centre was committed to advancing excellence in the practice of journalism and advancement of ethical standards.

She also charged them to obey the university’s rules and regulations and also strictly adhere to its disciplinary code and ethical values.

 The Director of the Kwabena Nketia Centre for African Studies,Prof. Kwabena Akurang–Parry, urged the matriculates to always remember their roots.

He observed that by doing so, they would exhibit lifestyles which would help them to become women and men of substance in the society.

Komla Dumor­

Komla Dumor was born on October, 3, 1972 in Accra to Ernest Dumor and Cecilia Dumor.He started as the morning show host for Joy FM in Accra and was the 2003 winner of the Ghana Journalists Association’s Journalist of the year.

He joined the BBC African Service in London as a host of the radio programme, Network Africa. He also presented programmes such as The World Today, World News and Africa Business Report.

He was the host of BBC’s Focus on Africa until his sudden death on January, 18, 2014.
