Ashanti Region honours 76 teachers

Seventy-six hardworking teaching and non-teaching staff members have been honoured for their commitment towards the improvement of standards of education at the Regional Teachers Awards ceremony at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North District in the Ashanti Region.

The awardees,  who were selected in 2009, 2010, and 2011 were jointly honoured by the government. 

They were presented with refrigerators, flat-screen television sets, gas cookers, motorcycles and certificates of  appreciation.

 The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, said education was key to human and national development,  and  the government would remain committed to providing infrastructure and other educational logistics to boost quality education in the country.

He said teachers had a major responsibility to transform the youth in the country.

He said to boost teacher education, the government had granted 3,000 teachers study leave with pay to pursue various courses and 365 of the number had been allocated to the Ashanti Region.

Mr Opoku was not happy with some parents attacking teachers,and added that the government would deal with such offenders.

He stated that the government would continue with the supply of free laptop computers to beef up the 7,000 computers that had been supplied to students in the region.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Kofi Sarto Kantanka, said the Best Teachers Award’s Scheme introduced by  the government was in recognition of the contribution teachers and educational workers had made to the socio-economic development of the country.

 Mr Sarfo Kantanka urged teachers to exhibit a high sense of professionalism not only to maintain respectability in the society and enhance teaching and teaching learning, but also justify the government’s  huge motivational  investment in education.

The acting Deputy Director General of Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Stephen Adu, said education was important to national development,  and stressed the need for parents to partner  government to ensure quality education in the country. 

He called on teachers to adopt modern style of teaching to meet the current needs of pupils and students.
