‘Adapt to the ever-changing tools’

The Manager, Technical Training of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Academy,  Akuse, Ing. Mrs Sophia Abena Tijani, has asked teachers to adapt to the ever–changing tools and changes that are being implemented in education in order to meet the demands of a teacher in the 21st century.

She said teachers must be up to date with the current educational trends and technology and “they must change their lesson notes to make them more current and relevant in the 21st century”.

Mrs Tijani was speaking on the theme, “Re-Engineering education in Ghana for economic development in the 21st century” at the open day and third graduation of the Akuse VRA International School in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.

According to Mrs Tijani, technology is changing at a rapid pace and there is the need for teachers to be prepared for the trend.

“An effective teacher knows that learning about the latest gadget can truly transform his or her students’ education so they are not just current on the new trends, but really know how to master them,” she added.

Re-engineering education

She explained that the re-engineering concept in education was aimed at making education systems better at developing a population that could adapt to the changes in society and add value to lives for economic growth.

She said learning was deemed to be more effective when the learner could share his or her ideas and knowledge with others, adding that “sharing your expertise and experience and communicating and learning from others is an important part of learning and teaching process’’.

“The new education system seeks to ensure that education systems adjust to meet the changing needs of the individuals and societies they are meant to serve. Is our education system today serving this purpose?” she asked.

Brief history

The Supervisor of the Akuse International School, Mr Reuben Atsu Kugblenu, in his report said the school was established by the VRA in September 1982, as one of its satellite schools to cater for children and wards of the VRA workers engaged in the construction of the Kpong Hydro- electrical Dam at Akuse.
