Are you devoted to your spouse?

There was a touching story of an American woman who died and her body sent to a funeral home. Her three dogs that had never gone out of town were able to find their way several kilometers away and stayed at the funeral home for days without food, apparently waiting to take their ‘madam’ home.

This is an excellent example of devotion, a feeling of love and loyalty toward someone or something.

How to show devotion to your spouse

In marriage, you are supposed to leave your mother and father, cleave to your wife and become one flesh. You leave single life behind and make your marriage a topmost priority.

Marriage is about complete identity for life. You and your spouse are one and must, therefore, be open and make mutual decisions on what is best for your marriage; you give up freedom in your old single life, accept new responsibilities and put the needs of your spouse ahead of you.

Never allow any other person or interest to have greater priority in your life. Draw a good balance between your marriage and extended family members, children, work and hobbies.

Love and support your extended family members and in-laws but do not allow them to take over your marriage.

Put your spouse ahead of your children. If you love your children, first love your spouse. Your children need the security of knowing that parents are deeply committed to each other.

Be affectionate before your children. If you love and care for each other, your children will most likely enjoy their future marriage.

Work is necessary to provide the needs of your marriage. It improves your self-esteem, personal value and partnership. Work is, therefore, a fundamental right and a gift of God.

You must, however, never neglect your marriage for your work. Work at work and marry at home. This means you don’t make your home an extension of your workplace and the cost of your spouse.

Recently, an American wedded his smartphone. Studies also show almost half of spouses would rather spend time with their smartphones at home, but not with their spouses.

Today, many partners put password on their phones. If you have nothing to hide, be totally transparent to your spouse and make time for your marriage and not with your friends, hobbies or smartphones.

Be home physically and mentally to spend time together and care for each other.

Honour your roles. A husband must be the leader of the marriage, the protector, organiser, director and provider. He must love his wife and honour her.

A wife must be submissive to her husband and be a helpmate.

Honour your vows with complete fidelity. An affair never happens suddenly. There are gradual steps that lead to infidelity. You must, therefore, watch out for small actions such as time alone with the opposite sex that appears harmless but can lead you to infidelity.

Watch your friendship with the opposite sex and never say or do anything that you wouldn’t want your spouse to know.

Are you devoted to your spouse?

When you have genuine love in your marriage, devotion comes easily and happily as you care and serve each other.

When you love with devotion, wonderful things happen to your marriage. You enjoy greater emotional and physical intimacy.

You have someone who champions and supports you, someone who will always be there for you to lift you up and help you to shoulder the burdens of life. You give complete attention to each other.

With devotion you find joy beyond anything you could ever have imagined. Accept your spouse for who he or she is, allow him or her to make mistakes and forgive unconditionally.

Love is years of devotion because true love upholds your heart when infatuation is gone.

Devotion must be ongoing. You must, therefore, wake up to your responsibilities, make all the sacrifices you can and make the most of your marriage.

Fact is the quality of your marriage is a reflection of your devotion. Devotion is true love, one that never fails.
