Black Lace band reaches out for own identity

The band has been known for about five years for its big repertoire that embraces well-executed cover versions of material drawn from styles such as Highlife, Reggae, Afrobeat, R&B, Latin and Jazz Funk. It is now set to win over music lovers with its own material.

Led by keyboardist Daniel De-Veer, popularly referred to as Bronzy, the band is ready with its first single titled ‘Dream Girl’ which will be on the market early December.

“We are now on a path to establish a brand for the band that truly represents the abundant capabilities we possess,” says Bronzy. “We recognise and respect our talents, have honed them to the highest level and everyone should make ears for own stuff now.”

Black Lace comprises Daniel ‘Bronzy’ De-Veer (keyboards & band director), Dan Tetteh (lead singer),

Frank Kissi (drums), Richard Baffour Awuah (bass), Samuel Owusu Asante (percussion), Ato Kwamena Otoo (guitar), Edward Biney (keyboards) and Michael Manley (percussion).

‘Dream Girl’, recorded by Bronzy in his Play The Note studio at Dansoman in Accra, leans toward Highlife. It is a love song rendered in English and Twi that also incorporates elements of other contemporary styles that give it a wide appeal.

There a few other singles by the band which will be put out soon after ‘Dream Girl’ to be followed by an album in mid-2023. The idea is to steadily unveil the band’s own pieces to the public who have enjoyed their versatility at high-profile corporate and private events and at some of the nation’s major live music venues.

“We just want to solidify our status as a progressive band eager to do our thing. There have been amazing accomplishments by Ghanaian acts on the world stage and we want to be mentioned whenever the roll is called,” the Black Lace leader pointed out.

Many of Ghana’s biggest names in popular music have acknowledged the competence of the Black Lace band and have called on it to back them on numerous occasions. These well-known acts include Gyedu Blay Ambolley, MzVee, Sarkodie, Becca, Amandzeba, Samini, Efya, Amakye Dede, Kuami Eugene and Abiana.

Bronzy says all those guys come with their own feels to what they do but this band has been able to handle them satisfactorily due to their (Black Lace) flexibility.

“Some of them might have even influenced the way we work out our own things but that’s the nature of music. Influences can come from all directions,” Bronzy stated. “It depends on how you work with those influences,”

Many keen followers of the live music scene here describe the Black Lace band as a tight unit capable of delivering pleasant music no matter the occasion. It hasn’t stopped doing that but it also sees the need to create a legacy through its own identity
