Schools are not safe

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNSF) has revealed that most schools in the country have no fire safety equipment in place in the event of any fire outbreak.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Divisional Officer Grade III Prince Billy Anaglate, said “visits we have made to some schools have revealed that most of them do not have fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and emergency exits. What this means is that, should there be an outbreak of fire, it can lead to serious loss of lives and destruction of the school buildings.”

He said if schools have such safety equipment available, if there is a fire outbreak, it would be easier to detect the fire in good time before it got worse.

Mr Anaglate said the GNFS had mapped out plans to intensify education for schools to be equipped with fire safety equipment to protect schoolchildren in case of any emergency.

He, however, said if the constant appeals and education were not heeded by school proprietors and heads, the service would take action against those schools.

In the meantime, he said the service would be sending personnel of the service to schools to educate both pupils and teachers on fire preventive measures.

The service, he said, was considering plans to include fire safety programmes in the curriculum of schools so that schoolchildren throughout the country would be educated on fire and safety techniques.

“A committee will be set up to look at that so that majority of schools can benefit from it,” he added.
