Speaking to selected junior high schools (JHSs) in Tema, Mr Sowa said the GCGL was committed to the education of school children since the future of Ghana and Africa was in the hands of the youth.

“We are of the view that the future of our nation rests in the hands of you the young ones.

We believe that if we are able to impart some knowledge to you, the future of our nation will be secure,” he said.

As part of this year’s edition of the Junior Graphic National Essay Competition, management of the GCGL organised a writing workshop for schools in Tema to offer participants more insights into essay writing in order to meet the standards required of them.

Over 195 pupils from 12 JHSs participated in the programme held at the West African Examinations Council Hall in Tema.

The essay competition, which aims at helping students to improve on their writing skills, was on the theme: Taking a Stand for Excellence in Education. It ends today November 1, 2017.

Students are to choose one of two topics to write on. From the entries that would be received, the best 10 essays would be selected from each region to progress to the next stage.

Mr Sowa said the Junior Graphic was a partner in the growth process of the youth and as part of its contribution towards their development had introduced a newspaper with useful content to serve their interests.

“As a business that understands the demographic segments that we connect to, we have the Junior Graphic for the basic schools.

Beyond the JHS, we also have the Graphic Youth World that serves students in second-cycle and tertiary institutions in the country”, he added.

A retired Educationist, Mr Daniel Kodzo Doe, who was the resource person, urged the students not to allow bad habits including the use of pidgin English to destroy their writing abilities.

He explained that the use of pidgin English could make them fail their examinations since they would not be able to express themselves in acceptable Standard English in examinations.

Mr Doe, who is also the Dufia of Ve-Hoeme, took the participants through topics such as letter writing, formal and informal letters, article writing, speech writing and debate writing.

The Tema Business Manager of the GCGL, Eugenia Maccready, urged the students to seize the opportunity offered them to improve on their essay writing skills to be able to meet the expectations of examiners.

The Junior Graphic National Essay Competition is sponsored by Vodafone Foundation, Kingdom Books and Stationery and iLearn Education, Twellium Industrial Company and BiC.
