About 9,000 newborn babies die every year from premature births, infections and other complications.
A UNICEF representative, Dr Victor Ngongalah, who made this known at the National Newborn Executive Forum and the fourth holders meeting in Accra, has called on the government and the private sector to provide quality care to mothers and newborns to ensure their survival.
The forum, which was on the theme: "Born too soon, born too small; help us live" brought together a number of partners in the health sector to discuss ways to speed up quality healthcare services for babies born before their time or those with low birth weight in the country.
He noted that neonatal deaths (newborn babies, who die especially during the first month after birth) contributed to 48 per cent of under-five deaths and 70 per cent of infant deaths in 2011.
