Auntie Betty: I’m worried about parents’ fights

Dear Auntie Betty, I am 14 years old and live with my parents.

However, I am not happy at home because my parents are always fighting.

I become worried when they fight and this is affecting me. The pandemic has even made it worse because I am always home.
What should I do?

Worried Boy,
Accra.

Dear Worried Boy, It is indeed a sad situation when you have to hear your parents fighting at home. Although parents having an argument is normal, the intensity and the frequency can affect the well-being of a child.

I suggest you have a chat with your parents or the one with whom you are close and let them know how their fights are affecting you. If you cannot talk to them directly, you can write a letter.

I am sure your parents have no idea how their fights are affecting you and will definitely do the needful once you let them know.

You have to bear in mind that it is no fault of yours that they fight and it is also important that you do not take sides. Do make sure you do not witness the fights if they continue - you could find a place in the house where you cannot hear them and engage in an activity that you enjoy.

You may also go out with permission from your parents and play with your friends in the neighbourhood just to get away from the hostility at home.

Although it might be difficult, I would advise that you do not worry too much about your parents’ arguments. What has been going on is between the two of them and has nothing to do with you.

However, if the fights get out of control, then I think it is about time you confide in a relative or an elderly person you can trust.
I wish you the very best.
