Nananom raise funds for new school gate for GHANACOLL

The significance of a gate in architecture and also in religion cannot be gain said. So it is that the 1993 Year Group of Ghana National College, Cape Coast, is spearheading the erection of a modern school gate for the school.

The present school gate of Ghana National College is a creation of the 20th century and as the school approaches its 70th milestone in 2018; the consensus is for a futuristic school gate befitting the school’s enviable status as the only school in Ghana that took the name ‘Ghana’ even before the Gold Coast attained independence and adopted that name.

Towards the attainment of that goal, the entirety of Nananom are requested to be present at the Teachers’ Hall, Accra, at 4p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2014 to make financial and other contributions towards raising the sum of GH¢80,000 for the project.

The ‘Ghanacoll Gateway Project,’ according to the executive of the 1993 Year Group “is one of the major signposts heralding the school’s 70th anniversary celebrations in 2018. Looking back at what Ghanacoll has done for us and several generations of Nananom, we are committed to completing the project before the school’s next speech and prizegiving day scheduled for February, 2014.”

This Friday’s fundraiser will see successive generations of Nananom raising funds in the typical Ghanacoll spirit to meet the approved expenditure of the ‘Ghanacoll Gateway Project.” In the words of Nana Ebow Botsio, President of the 1993 Year Group, “we came to Ghanacoll to read about the sacrifices a number of youth of the then Gold Coast made in 1948 towards the attainment of independence.

That included the students’ strike in Cape Coast that saw the closure of all the boys’ secondary schools in Cape Coast and eventually the dismissal of a number of their teachers and eventually the founding of Ghana National College in July, 1948, nine clear years before the attainment of independence and the choice of the name ‘Ghana.’ Years on, we are emboldened as a relatively youthful group of Nananom to drive this effort to attain this landmark.

So far, the support we have received from senior Nananom and our juniors for the execution of this project is overwhelming.

The last rally is the fund raiser on Friday, and we of the 1993 Year Group know that all Nananom will rise to the occasion to help us deliver. ”

For his part, Nana Ben Odai, the National President of Nananom, lauds the bold efforts of the 1993 Year Group.

“Our elders say those who climb a tree well deserve a push. The 1993 Year Group has proven to be a dynamic one and the national executive on behalf of all Nananom support the ‘Ghanacoll Gateway Project.” Let us dip into our pockets on Friday and beyond to support this laudable project. Our school deserves a befitting gateway as part of its 70th anniversary.

Other initiatives are lined up to make the 70th anniversary not only memorable for Nananom and all connected to the school but also a beneficial one to the school. One of the lines of our school anthem charges us thus, “Our school, our age, our land to bless.” This is an opportune time to bless our school and we must all get involved,” Nana Ben Odai said.

According to details of the ‘Ghanacoll Gateway Project’ released by the 1993 Year Group, various categories of donors; from the least contributors to the highest contributors to the project will have their names immortalised in marble stone to be fixed to the promenade of the new gate.

“All contributions are welcome, no matter how small and all contributors will be acknowledged in a permanent memorial to be fixed at the new school gate,” according to Nana Ebow Botsio.

The fund raiser will also be graced with the presence of Nana Mrs Juliana Owusu-Ansah, the Headmistress of Ghana National College.

Let the history of the futuristic ‘Ghanacoll Gateway Project’ bear your name by contributing to the building of the new school gate.
