Fifi Folson on Sunset Drive

Rewards come in many forms and while most people prefer to have theirs in monetary form, Fifi Folson says he finds it most rewarding when he gets testimonies from his listeners telling him how his radio show has positively impacted their lives.

As host of the only Christian oriented drive-time show on radio, Sunset Drive on Sunny FM, Fifi sees his job as a ministry, which he uses to bring hope and the joy of the Lord to thousands of Ghanaians each day.

“This is the opportunity the Lord has given me. I evangelise through my show and it is for this reason I always make an altar call at the end of my show,” he said.

In one telling testimony, he recalls how a former inmate in one of the country’s prisons walked up to him and revealed that he (the prisoner) had repented and given his life to Christ just by listening to the Sunset Drive show.

“As I speak to you, the former convict is now a graduate of a bible school and preparing to launch a gospel album,” Fifi told this reporter last week.

Surprisingly, the affable radio presenter said, originally it was not his intention to be in the media. Fifi initially wanted to be an artist, then later an engineer but after encouragement from his family and friends at church, he enrolled at the Ghana Institute of Journalism and later the United Artists Training School, which introduced him to the media industry.

After many unsuccessful attempts to get a job in the media, Fifi almost gave up on his dream but he prayed to God and asked Him to direct his steps and help him secure a job in the media before the age of 24.

It was during this phase of his life that he coined the iconic phrase which has become more or less his trademark anytime he comes on air, “May God’s grace see all of us through every life’s race with an extra pace that no enemy can chase.”

Divine intervention came in the form of a radio hosting competition organised by Sunny FM. Fifi emerged as one of three finalists and was asked by the station manager to start work immediately. That was exactly two days before his 24th birthday!

Fifi, who has been married for five years and blessed with two children, Aseda and Nhyira, attributes the success  of his radio show to God’s blessing and the fact that he strives for perfection in everything he does.

“I value my listeners and as a result, I make it a point to always deliver my best. My personal motto which is incidentally that of my alma mater Adisadel College is to be the best at everything I do and as a result, I spend many hours researching and preparing my material for my show even before I go on air,” he said.

He stated that the songs he played on his show are rigorously screened and he refuses to play any song which he feels do not meet the high standards expected by his listeners.

Fifi admits being a Christian in a predominantly secular industry can be very challenging at times. He revealed that it becomes very difficult to remain humble especially when people continuously heap praises on him.

“I remind myself that I’m only a vessel being used by The Lord and I must not take God’s glory from Him.
