Over a week after she snatched the crown from nine other beautiful contestants, Ruth is still basking in the glow of her win and tells Graphic Showbiz she will put her heart and soul into bringing home the crown.

Ghana’s participation at the Miss Universe pageant in recent times has been woeful but Ruth and her handlers are confident she can make a difference this year.
“I am really preparing for it. I am currently taking classes on various things, I go to the gym every day and I’m learning new things like playing the acoustic guitar and tennis. I will give it my all,” the 23-year-old said.

It had long been her dream to be a beauty queen so when the opportunity came, she did not spare any effort to make sure she emerged victorious at the finals which took place on September 2 at the Labadi Beach Hotel.

On what worked for her Ruth said, “Consistency and hard work. I put my best out there so that even if I didn’t win, nobody could say I didn’t do well enough and fortunately I won.”

Two students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Hephie Armah and Emily Randolph placed second and third respectively.

Since she won, Ruth who is a graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon and represented the Central Region has been busy making the rounds, granting interviews on various platforms and says it has been an overwhelming experience so far. “I am still full of emotions, I am excited and overjoyed.”

The first of six children, Ruth’s confidence throughout the event was palpable and this could perhaps be credited to the support of her parents, siblings and even her church; the Good Shepherd Catholic Church at Tema Community 2.

“My parents were with me from day one and told me to do what makes me happy. They are even more excited than I am. When I drove my car home, my dad, grandma and siblings didn’t know what to do. They were beside themselves with joy.”

The Miss Universe brand has not enjoyed as much recognition as before and the new owners were determined to make sure it shone and they did so with an incident free pageant.

Ruth praised the organisers for what she described as a near-perfect show. “Miss Universe under Miss Menaye was awesome. Everything went well and we didn’t have to pay for anything at all including our costumes. And I have received all my prizes. I took my car home that same night,” Ruth gushed to Showbiz.

Apart from the Hyundai saloon car, Ruth also got a one-year contract with Italian modeling agency, The Lab Models. She will also work with two charities – Smile Train and My Sister’s Keeper Foundation.

Miss Universe Ghana 2004, Menaye Donkor Muntari who now owns the Ghana franchise tells Showbiz she has no regrets at taking it up although it has been a significant financial investment. “ I’m happy at how it turned out because we had a short time to organise this.”

She praised her team who she said were very professional, supportive and helped make her vision come true.

On preparing Ruth for the Miss Universe world pageant, Menaye said the new queen was halfway there. “She is intelligent and has a passion to succeed. All we need to do is add on to her accomplishments and get her mentally prepared.”

Ruth Quashie had words of encouragement for young people. “Everyone is allowed to dream. They should follow their heart’s desires and not let anyone deter them. They should go with the mentality of failing rather than not doing at all.”

Miss Universe Ghana was sponsored by EIB Networks, SHEY, Malz Promotions, Fiesta Gh and Rigworld.
