U2Jay says 'Pick My Call'

IT’S a frustrating feeling not hearing from a loved one in these COVID-19 days of restrictions on gatherings, appeals to stay at home if stepping out is not absolutely necessary and social distancing.

It is this sort of unnerving situation that has inspired the U2Jay duo of UWonda and Jewnart to come out with a new single called Pick My Call. It is a mid-tempo piece with a catchy, simple chorus that’s likely to grow on listeners pretty soon.

The song was produced, mixed and mastered by Kwabena Kay and UBeat. Though the U2Jay guys have their own studio and are both sound engineers, they decided to work with other hands to help bring a different feel to the new track.

And the result is quite clear: the lyrics are not cluttered and the song breathes at a decent pace for it to seep properly into listeners.

“We felt we needed to inject some kind of fresh groove to this track because we have been engineering our own songs almost all the time.

"We definitely made some input into how it was eventually packaged but we allowed Kwabena Kay and UBeat the space to inject their feel and we are happy with the final product,” UWonda and Jewnart said.

They reckon effective communication between people is always crucial for the sustenance and growth of all sorts of relationships.

Since the telephone has become a major tool of contact these days, they appeal to people to help reduce the stress, and worries of lovers, friends and relatives by picking their calls or getting back to the callers if they are not able to pick and talk right away.

“The piece may sound like directed at lovers alone but we are only asking everyone to learn to stay in touch with those who matter in their lives because these are not normal times.

“A quick ‘hello’, ‘how are you’, ‘I love you’ or ‘how are you doing’ could sometimes be more therapeutic than loads of pills and hospital care,” the two friends stated.

U2Jay won the Hiplife Song of the Year trophy in September last year at the Emerging Music Awards (EMA) with their Chorkor Beyonce which featured Nii Funny.

Other known tracks of the Accra-based duo who have shared the stage with acts such as Samini, Koo Ntakra, Nii Funny and Shatta Wale include If E No Be God, Eye Normal, Odo Na Eye, Police, Na True, See My Baby, No Be China, Nungua Mango, By The Way and Blue Balls.

Pick My Call is available at Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, Tidal, Boomplay, Deezer and other digital music platforms.
