Kwame Despite, others honoured by MUSIGA

It was a wonderful night of music, dance, food and drinks at the second Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) Grand Ball last Friday  at the State House in Accra.

In the midst of everything, however, the union did not forget to show appreciation to  some of the individuals and organisations that have helped it get this far.

MUSIGA’s  highest honours, termed the Music Industry Pillar Awards, were bestowed on media conglomerate, Dr. Osei Kwame Despite; former First Lady, Mrs Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings and the Midland Savings and Loans Limited.

They were honoured for their  immense contributions in various capacities, to the development of arts and entertainment business in this country, especially to the music sector.

Part of the citation for Mrs Rawlings said in addition to her general support for the creative arts sector, she was was highly instrumental in the allocation of the current MUSIGA headquarters to the union.

In a video message to guests at the function, the former First lady of the Republic said the honour was a reflection of how the music industry had not forgotten those who help in propelling it’s success.

The citation to Dr. Osei Kwame Despite indicated that even before his foray into the media business, he had established himself as a leading producer and distributor of Ghanaian music who  worked with a tall list of Ghanaian artistes.

“Till today, his Despite Music Shop continues to be the one-stop shop for all kinds of Ghanaian music, serving as a depository for music over the years,” the citation said.

The third award went to Midland Savings and Loans. The accompanying citation praised the outfit for working with key industry stakeholders on various projects, including giving over two million Ghana cedis in loans to musicians under the AJUMAPA Loan Scheme.

“You have supported the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Car Prize donation; Ghana Music Week and the Grand Ball. Also, you have supported the government-sponsored KPMG research on the music sector, aimed at establishing the contribution of music to Ghana's economy,” the citation said.

In his acceptance Speech, Mr. Michael Adjouvu, Managing Director of Midland Savings and Loans, expressed his appreciation for the award.

“We were doing our bit, not knowing it would be appreciated this much. We thank the industry and promise to do even more,” Mr Adjouvu said.

The MUSIGA Grand Ball was presented by Johnnie Walker, Huawei, Midland Savings and Loans and Tigo. It was produced by Showbiz Africa for MUSIGA.
