Basat goes ‘gaga’

The Ghanaian music scene has been criticised for the lack of female rappers and this perceived “drought” is perhaps what has influenced new female rapper, Basat, to join the game.

The Tamale based artiste is out with a new song, Gaga, and believes she has got what it takes to break the predominantly male dominated rap and dancehall scene with her style.

Gaga, is a party song that is sure to get people grooving to the beat. The song has a high tempo and is fun to listen to. In the song, Basat sings about getting on the dance floor in the club to shake her stuff irrespective of who is watching and asks others to do the same.

Not limiting herself to simply singing, Basat proves her versatility by rapping on the song in a mixture of Dagbani, Pidgin and English languages at regular intervals.

Basat’s style is similar to that of female hiplife artiste, Eazzy, but she dismissed claims that she is copying the Wengeze hit maker.

In an interview with Showbiz last Wednesday, she revealed that she draws inspiration from female artistes such as Beyonce and Nicki Minaj.

Asked why she chose to venture into a genre that was mainly the preserve of men, Basat said that she was not going to let herself be limited by people’s opinions.

“There is no musical style that is exclusive to any particular gender so why should I let that stop me from doing what I like. It’s all about talent and I believe I have what it takes to break through the music scene in Ghana,” she said.

She added that she felt artistes from the Southern part of the country were dominating the music scene in Ghana, a trend she was determined to break.

Basat, real name, Bawah Hafsat, attended Central International  School and Fathul Mubeen Senior High School both in Tamale.

She released her debut album in 2012, titled Daadan Bɛ  and she is currently signed onto the HyperLinkGH Entertainment record label.
