2015: Albert Ocran urges less talk, more action

Ghanaians have been urged to focus on 'exploration with integrity' which has been adopted as the theme for 2015 by Springboard, The Virtual University, which airs on Joy FM, a private radio station in Accra.

The Host of Springboard, Reverend Albert Ocran, made the disclosure on the first show of the year on January 4 when he took listeners through what they should expect in the coming weeks.

Having made many plans and written New Year resolutions at the turn of the year, Rev. Ocran, who is also a pastor at the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), said it was now time for people to move beyond mere talk to deliberate action that will help bring into reality what they had dreamt or wished for.

"Can all of us on this platform commit ourselves to making a definite move from talk to action?" he asked in a rhetoric reference to patrons of the motivational talk show which airs every Sunday evening.

Touching on New Year resolutions, which have become a norm at the year-end for most people across the world, he said it was regrettable that many people failed to follow through with their resolutions after making them.

"Proponents of New Year resolutions believe that a new year represents a new chapter in a person's life. While this may be a laudable idea, research has shown that many people forget their new year resolutions in the very first month. In fact, some after making them, never open those records or even remember them. As a result, they end up breaking them or failing to follow them," he said, adding that such a habit needed to be stopped.

"It is not enough to have a wish list. The critical thing is, there must be a personal strategic plan. Beyond that, your objective for 2015 must also fit into your bigger objectives in the next five years," he emphasised.

Theme for 2015

The 2015 theme, 'exploration with integrity,' ties in with the outcome of the Leaders' Digest, a series of interactions with Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) which ran from September to December last year. On the show, integrity emerged as the most treasured virtue by more than half of the 15 corporate executives and leaders who appeared on the show.

Indications are that this year's theme will feature discussions on how people find ways of realising their dreams without sacrificing honesty in their dealings.

Five personal commitments for 2015

Rev. Ocran proposed five commitments which the general public could do to help raise the value of their lives this year. He said they would be worthwhile for people who acted diligently on them.

"These things will not cost you much but they will transform your life," he said, noting that they are part of the things that will help people move from talk to action.

He mentioned the need to read at least a good book every month as the first and primary commitment that people wishing to raise the value of their lives should do.

While admitting that the definition of a good book was relative, he said people could select books in areas that met their interest and commit to finishing them within a month.

The second was to join thousands of other listeners to attend the National Convocation of the Springboard Roadshow, which comes off on February 28 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

At the event, experts are handy in providing guidance and expert advice on business plans, writing of curriculum vitae and cover letters, proposals for business partnerships as well as how to invest towards the future. These four areas, he said, would be discussed in detail during this year's road show at all venues, including the Accra show.

The third commitment was to sign up to the SMS Academy, a daily motivational messaging system from the Springboard platform which provided practical education for subscribers on various themes.

The fourth and fifth commitment, he said, were the need to prepare a 20-year personal development plan and finally to build social or relational equity that could help grow one's person, career or business.

He explained that such a 20-year plan must include the person's financial and other personal and corporate objectives. He hinted that the show would in the next weeks take listeners through how to prepare the plan as part of efforts aimed at helping as many as were interested to be able to do so.

New year message

The first show of the year often features a new year message to set the tone for listeners. The January 4 edition featured a playback of a message on “Repositioning Through Investment" originally shared during the Springboard 2014 Roadshow.

The presentation, which featured Rev. Ocran himself, presented investment as a key to personal financial repositioning. Rev Ocran defined investment as "devoting one's time, resources and energy into something with the aim that it will bring back results that are worth the effort".

Although investment is often seen in a business sense, he said it cut across all segments of life, noting that people could even invest in their favourite football teams, personal loyalties and marriages, among others.

As part of the principles of investing, he said people needed to avoid ostentatious living today in favour of investment towards the future.

Investment, he said, is a must for everyone, irrespective of the person's background, age or position.

"Investment is a must for everyone. It is a scriptural, constitutional and a moral obligation. It is so unfair to yourself not to do something today that will give you a brighter future," he said. GB
