Volleyball: El-Wak Wings retain peaceful election trophies
A thrilling five-set final saw a late surge by La Pioneers Volleyball Club (LAPVC) being halted by defending champions, El-Wak Wings ladies, with a 3-2 scoreline of 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 21-10 to lift the trophy and receive other consolation prizes from the sponsor, Samir Group.

In the men’s encounter, El-Wak Wings faced off with Adentan-based Immanuel Presby Church in a one-sided match. The Adentan based club were thrashed 3-0 (25-20,25-19, 25-17) in the final.
The two-day competition that began last Friday, saw eight of the region’s best clubs engaged in a fierce battle across the net for honours, supremacy and bragging rights.
Qualification
The feat qualified El-Wak Wings to the International Volleyball Tournament (IVT) slated for Sya Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso from May 25 to 30 next year.
Clubs from nine West African countries will compete in the annual event towards the World Club Volleyball Championship next year.
The countries are Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Ghana, Senegal, Benin, Togo, Niger, Nigeria and Burkina Faso.
Thrills and excitements
After a long absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition drew hundreds of volleyball fans to the complex and generated excitement and debate among fans and players.
The competition dubbed: Peace and Unity Volleyball Championship, is to promote peace and unity before, during and after the upcoming election.

The Managing Director of the Samir Group, wholesalers of Yokohama Tyres, Mr Nazem Karroum, pledged to support the sport to become a national pastime.

Appeal
The coach of El-Wak Wings appealed for sponsorship from corporate bodies to help the club challenge the security agencies during the league.
“I also thank my players for showing up on the occasion and I charge them to go all out to attract invitation from the national body and play for the nation,” he stated.
