The President of Ghana Weightlifting Association, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has called for financial support from individuals, organisation and the Government to develop the sport and raise the level of performance in the country.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic yesterday, Mr Mensah said he had numerous developmental plans for the association but these plans could only come alive if they were solidly backed by the needed finances.
Some of these plans include a month’s training in Nigeria, home and away competitions and a three-week training of the coaches by a specialist trainer.
He said steps, if put in place, would help prepare Ghanaian weightlifters adequately for the pending African tournament.
Mr Nunoo Mensah was unhappy the government focused its resources solely on football activities with little attention given to other sporting disciplines and activities.
“It is in the constitution that the government financially supports sports, but it seems the government has focused too much attention on football to the neglect of other disciplines which have potential to win laurels for the country and put it on the international sporting map,” he said.
