David Coote: EPL referee suspended over video appearing to show him insult Klopp

English Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended by PGMOL, the referees' governing body, as an investigation is launched following a video circulating on social media in which Coote allegedly makes disparaging remarks about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp.

In the unverified video, Coote is purportedly heard making negative comments about Liverpool and Klopp, who departed Anfield in May. Reuters has not verified the video’s authenticity or its date of recording.

"David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will make no further comment until that process is complete," PGMOL announced in a statement.

Liverpool, aware of the video’s circulation on social media, has declined to comment while the PGMOL investigation is ongoing.

Coote, 42, officiated Liverpool’s recent 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday and has served as a Premier League referee since 2018. The video appears to reference a July 2020 league match between Liverpool and Burnley, which ended in a 1-1 draw and saw Klopp publicly criticise Coote for his officiating decisions regarding tackles against Liverpool players.
