Mr Nunoo Mensah paid a courtesy call on the minister last Monday to brief him on the upcoming National Weightlifting Youth Championship at the Accra Sports Stadium and also took the opportunity to invite him to the competition.

He stated that the federation was looking forward to seeing over 60 young weightlifters participate in the first ever youth competition, as well as over 500 spectators.

In response, Mr Vanderpuye, who is a former president of the GWF, congratulated the federation on their efforts in developing the sport at the grassroots and promised to support them.

He added that weightlifting was a sport which had the potential to succeed when athletes were trained at a very tender age.

"I am ready to go the extra mile with you to make sure you succeed.”

"When I was the president of the federation, the problem we had in the past was human resource and I am happy you are now focused on the technical aspect," he noted.

The maiden National Weightlifting Youth Championship is sponsored by Indomie and supported by Rush Energy Drink, Promasidor, Coca-Cola, among others.
