‘Legon Sports Fund will revolutionise sports’

The Director of Sports at the University of Ghana, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, says the Legon Sports Fund is a ‘one of its kind’ trust that would revolutionise sports in the country.

He contended that the primary aim of the fund was to act as an innovative buffer where a secured source of income could be generated as against reliance on central government.

According to him, the fund is the first of its kind in the whole country which would help students pay their fees, get bursaries, provide insurance for them and secure their entire stay on campus.

In an exclusive interview with the Graphic Sports in his office in Accra last Tuesday, the sports administrator told this paper that currently there exists GH¢250,000 in the fund, while funds are accruing from individuals, corporate agencies and internally generated avenues.“The sports fund will also, to a large extent, cater for infrastructure, and it is also envisaged that it would cater for other sporting infrastructure in the long run”, he stated.

Currently, the school has a refurbished football field, and a new volleyball court, while the athletics oval, tennis court, swimming pool and a fencing gymnasium are also under construction.He added that to encourage students to participate in sports and make use of the facilities, the school has a police dubbed University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) which supports students fully in the University.

He was optimistic that sports at the University would witness a great revolution for the benefit of the school and society as a whole.
