Koforidua Sports Stadium reconstruction underway

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has handed a boost to the development of sports in the Eastern Region following the decision to reconstruct the Koforidua Sports Stadium.

According to the consultant of the project, Joe Hackman, it will cost an estimated $1.8 million to upgrade the 61-year-old stadium to a world class status.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah in an address before breaking the ground on the project Monday, said he expected it to be completed in nine months.

He indicated that the government was appalled by the current state of the stadium hence the decision to replace it with a Youth Resource Centre which has multi-sport facilities.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah addressing a forum after the inspection of Koforidua Sports Stadium.

"Can you believe this? You call this a stadium with no tartan tracks for athletics?," Mr Asiamah questioned.

"When we are done, this will be a centre for athletics excellence in the Eastern Region".

Mr Asiamah said the government was determined to construct such facilities across all the regions to ensure that the Black Stars could play their matches across the country without any hitches.

He said the Youth Resource Centre when completed, will include a FIFA standard pitch, an eight lane tartan tracks, tennis court, a gymnasium, basketball court, handball courts, ICT Centre, Entrepreneurship Centre and a restaurant.
