With just over 24 hours to the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, national 200m record holder Joseph Paul Amoah has been named captain of Team Ghana ahead of the country's medal campaign in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 29-year-old sprinter, who won Ghana's only athletics medal—a bronze—in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, is regarded as key to the nation's sprint and 4x100m relay medal hopes in Glasgow.
Having also captained Team Ghana at the recent African Championships in Accra, Amoah heads into the Games in excellent form after clocking an impressive 19.99 seconds at the Ed Murphey Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, on July 10.
His leadership is expected to inspire Ghana's athletes as they pursue more podium finishes at the quadrennial event, in line with Team Ghana's slogan, "We Dare To Win."
Meanwhile, leading para powerlifter Tahiru Haruna and 17-year-old judoka Frema Agyei have been appointed Ghana's King's Baton Bearer and Flag Bearer, respectively, for Thursday's opening ceremony.
Their appointments to two of the nation's most prestigious ceremonial roles at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games underscore Ghana's commitment to inclusion, youth development and sporting excellence, while recognising the growing contribution of athletes with disabilities to the country's international success.
According to the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC Ghana), Haruna's selection further raises the profile of para sports in Ghana and underscores the importance of providing athletes with disabilities equal opportunities to represent the country on the global stage.
"The selections reflect the NPC's commitment to merit, inclusion and youth development," said NPC Ghana and Africa President, Samson Deen.
"The appointments also align with the government's efforts, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, to use sport as a vehicle for national unity and development."
Ghana is fielding a team of 40 athletes competing in nine sports in Glasgow: boxing (10 athletes), athletics (13), judo (2), swimming (4), track cycling (2), weightlifting (4), para-athletics (3), para-powerlifting (1) and para-swimming (1).
The team is targeting an improvement on the five medals won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Ghana's campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is powered by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, with support from GCB Bank PLC, Eezzy Group Foundation and TW Radio.
