Team Ghana heads to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with renewed optimism that a blend of experienced campaigners and exciting young talent can improve on the nation’s record of 63 Commonwealth Games medals when competition runs from tomorrow to August 2 in Scotland.
The Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana (CGA Ghana) has named a 40-member squad across nine disciplines, with athletics, boxing and para sport widely regarded as the country’s strongest medal hopes.
Leading the athletics challenge are sprint stars Benjamin Azamati and Joseph Paul Amoah, who will spearhead Ghana’s campaign in the individual sprints and the men’s 4x100m relay. Azamati heads to Glasgow after clocking a season’s best 10.00 seconds in the 100m, while Amoah has run 20.24 seconds over 200m.
Together with national record holder Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, Isaac Botsio, Mustapha Bokpin and James Dadzie, Ghana boasts one of Africa’s strongest relay squads and will be aiming for a podium finish.
The women’s 4x100m relay team also carries high hopes. Deborah Acheampong and Anita Afrifa provide proven sprint quality, while 100m hurdler Evonne Britton is expected to strengthen the relay team despite focusing mainly on hurdles in recent years.
Britton remains confident she can make a valuable contribution.
“Representing Ghana is always the greatest motivation. I may not have run the flat 100 metres for a while, but the 100m hurdles is built on the same speed, rhythm and explosive start,” she told Daily Graphic.
“I trust my preparation, and if selected for the relay, I’ll give everything for Team Ghana because wearing the national colours means giving your absolute best.”
Another major medal prospect is national high jump record holder Rose Yeboah, whose clearance of 1.96m during the NCAA season has placed her among the leading contenders in the Commonwealth field.
